The AV industry has come a long way in the past decade, especially in the realm of networking. In the past, we relied solely on analog connections and basic digital systems. Today, advanced network protocols are the backbone of our audio, video, and lighting systems.  In this article, we are going to explore the critical role of networking in AV, the concept of converged networking, and how it can simplify your systems and save money.

It wasn’t that long ago when analog connections and basic digital systems were the norm? As the industry evolved, we began to see the potential of networking for specific AV protocols. Enter Dante for audio, Art-net for lighting, and a host of other protocols that revolutionized how we manage and deploy AV systems. Today, wired networking is indispensable, supporting everything we do in AV.

Let’s take a closer look at some key AV network protocols that have shaped our industry:

AUDIO Protocols

In the audio world, we have Dante; Developed by Audinate, Dante has set the standard for digital audio networking. It offers low latency and high-quality audio transmission over standard IP networks, making it a favorite in live sound, broadcast, and recording studios.

With the reemergence of AVB with Milan: Audio Video Bridging (AVB) and its latest iteration, Milan, provides deterministic network performance. This ensures synchronized audio and video streams, which is crucial for live performances and installations.

Followed by another old friend of AES67: An open standard for audio over IP interoperability, AES67 allows different audio network systems to communicate seamlessly, enhancing flexibility and integration.

Lighting Protocols

Jumping over to Lighting Protocols, we start with Art-net; widely adopted for transmitting DMX512 data over Ethernet, Art-net is valued for its simplicity, broad compatibility with lighting equipment, and the for the length of time that it has been around.

Streaming ACN (sACN) is next up which is a standard protocol for transmitting DMX data over IP networks, sACN is essential for controlling lighting fixtures in large-scale productions and installations.

Video Protocols    

Next up Video Protocols; starting with NDI: Developed by NewTek, NDI enables high-quality, low-latency video transmission over standard IP networks. It’s popular for live video production and streaming.

ST2110: A suite of standards for professional media over IP networks, ST2110 is the backbone of broadcast environments, ensuring seamless integration and high-quality video transmission.

Brand-Specific Protocols

Lastly, let’s look at the “Brand-specific Protocols.” Various manufacturers have developed proprietary protocols to optimize performance and integration within their product ecosystems. Some examples include L-net, MA-net, and Net4.

The AV industry has seen rapid growth, largely thanks to networking technology advancements. As productions become larger and more complex, efficient and reliable network solutions have become paramount. The transition from traditional copper snakes to network cables has been a game-changer, offering greater flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Network-based protocols allow seamless integration of multiple audio, video, and lighting components, enhancing the overall quality of productions.

Converged networking refers to integrating multiple network services—such as audio, video, and lighting data—onto a single, unified network infrastructure. Unlike traditional networks that operate separately for different services, converged networks streamline operations by consolidating them. This reduces complexity, enhances efficiency, and provides a scalable solution that can adapt to future technological advancements.

Implementing converged networking in AV systems offers several benefits: Simplification: Consolidating multiple networks into one simplifies the overall system architecture, making it easier to manage and troubleshoot.

Cost Savings: Reduced infrastructure requirements mean lower cabling, hardware, and maintenance costs. Efficiency: Streamlined workflows enable quicker setup times, improved coordination between different AV components, and more efficient use of resources.

Scalability: Converged networks are designed to be scalable, allowing for easy expansion and integration of new technologies without significant overhauls.

Steps to Implement Converged Networking in AV

Transitioning to a converged network involves several key steps:

  1. Assessment: Evaluate the current network infrastructure and identify areas for improvement.
  2. Planning: Develop a comprehensive plan that outlines the transition’s goals, requirements, and timeline.
  3. Implementation: Install and configure the necessary hardware and software, ensuring compatibility with existing systems.
  4. Testing: Thoroughly test the new network to identify and resolve any issues before full deployment.
  5. Training: Provide training for staff to ensure they are familiar with the new network setup and protocols.

Real-world examples, such as large-scale events and installations, highlight the practical benefits and challenges of implementing converged networking.

 As I look to the future and see new technology all around every day,  I wonder if we will see advancements inspired by advancements like 5G, which would allow networks to expand past just cables. AI-driven network management tools will enable smarter, more efficient network operations, maybe even network design programs where all we have to do is say what products we are using, and the rest will be done. Increased interoperability with the continued development of standards like AES67 and ST2110 will improve interoperability between different AV systems and devices.

Networking has become integral to the AV industry, enabling more complex and high-quality productions. Converged networking, in particular, offers numerous benefits, including;

  • Simplification,
  • Cost savings,
  • Efficiency, and
  • Scalability

As technology continues to evolve, staying informed about the latest trends and advancements in networking will be crucial for AV professionals. By embracing these changes, the industry can continue to grow and innovate, delivering exceptional experiences to audiences worldwide.
